Scripture Reading:
Ephesians 5:6-14
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
What we just read:
Ephesians 5:6-14 emphasizes the importance of living a life that reflects God's light and truth, and warns against living a life of sin and darkness, urging believers to:
- Avoid empty words and deceptive beliefs (vv. 6-7)
- Live as children of light, demonstrating goodness and truth (vv. 8-10)
- Expose and renounce sinful practices (vv. 11-12)
- Seek what pleases the Lord and arise from spiritual slumber (vv. 13-14)
Questions:
What are empty words or meaningless conversation that I need to avoid, and how can I speak life giving words instead?
What are the fruits of light that I need to cultivate in my life? How can I find out what pleases the Lord and see His pleasure in my daily life, rather than seeking human approval?
What does it mean to arise from the dead and let Christ give me light and how can I experience spiritual resurrection?
Short Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father.
Help me to leave behind the darkness of my old life and walk in the light of Your truth. Give me the courage to renounce sin and seek Your pleasure in all I do.
May Your light shine in and through me, exposing any areas of darkness and guiding me towards goodness and truth.
Awaken me to the reality of Your presence and power, and help me to arise from spiritual slumber.
Fill me with Your Spirit and empower me to live a life that reflects Your character.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Conclusion:
Leave your old life of sin and darkness behind and walk in the light of God's truth and goodness. Don't be deceived by the world's empty promises and harmful beliefs. Instead, seek to please the Lord and live a life that reflects His character. Expose and renounce sin, and let the light of Christ shine in and through you.
